Part 1: Candidate sourcing mini-course – Organize what you are searching for

You need to find a candidate with specific skill-sets to fill a role.

  • Perhaps you are a corporate recruiter, trying to fill a role for a demanding manager.
  • Perhaps you are a headhunter, a recruiter working for a search firm, trying to make a placement with a client.

By the way, I’ve been there…in both roles – so I know the challenges and have been highly successful in each position.

Ok, let’s get started on a real-world candidate search

Right now…as I am writing this, I am searching for a software developer…someone who creates applications.

There are tons of software development languages as well as what parts of a software application a developer might focus on. When I start a search, I sort everything by MUST HAVE’S and NICE TO HAVE’S. This way, as you are searching for candidates, you can expand and contract your candidate search results until you narrow down your search results to a closely matching set of candidate to sift through.

Here are the MUST HAVES:

  • Software developer (the title)
  • Javascript – A software language: (one of the core technologies that run the web, making web pages or web applications interactive to the user).

These are the NICE TO HAVES:

  • Node.js – A software language: (this runs the Java code executes JavaScript code outside a web browser)
  • React.js – A software language: (this takes input data, such as what a user enters on a form, and puts it into a nice interface to display)
  • Lives in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area – This client wants to have someone relatively local to work a hybrid schedule, some days in the office, others remote.

Those are the basics of what I am targeting with this search.

What are the must-have’s and nice-to-haves with your role?

Take the time to identify the same primary skill-sets and other keys to the role into must-haves and nice-to-haves.

Write them down, just as I have done here. We are going to take those and implement a search to find potential candidates on the next step, using Boolean search strings.

Part 2 – Searching for candidate skill-sets

I hope I am helping you with some actionable value here with this free mini-course.

Perhaps you can help me…

I am currently developing a very comprehensive PAID course, where I share all of my 16 years of knowledge as a sourcing recruiter. Right now, I am developing a list of those interested getting free access to the course when it launches. All I ask in return is your valuable feedback to help me refine aspects of the course. Also, if you do enjoy the course and find it helpful, I would welcome any testimonials, which will help the course reach a wider audience.
